Nick’s Upholstery & Lidia Design

For over 28 years, Nick’s Upholstery & Lidia Design has been helping customers beautify their homes. The couple, who has a successful business in Highland Park, Illinois, opened a second location in Fontana after word-of-mouth referrals and demand for their work kept increasing. The showroom and retail store, across from The Abbey Resort on Valley View Drive, isn’t hard to find. “We inherited the big green frog with the building, which was once known as Fontana Outdoor Sports,” says Lidia. “The frog is a landmark in Fontana, and many visitors and locals stop by to have their picture taken with it.”

Lidia has a passion for interior design. She takes great pride in carefully listening to the unique needs of her customers and then following through with attention to every detail. Nick is a custom furniture maker and upholsterer, meticulously crafting each piece with each customer in mind. Nick learned his trade in Romania under master craftsmen. He worked in shops throughout Europe, creating intricate pieces, including commissioned work for some of the royal families. Working as a team, in their own shop, Nick and Lidia transform their customers’ needs into reality by creating custom furniture or reupholstered pieces that are not only stylish, but also comfortable and functional.

Nick builds each piece with quality structural materials, including a solid wood frame and only the finest padding to ensure it’s constructed in the best possible way. “Upholstery is a lost craft, no one teaches it anymore. Mass produced furniture is not built as it once used to be. Many pieces are made and assembled by machines, losing that unique touch and quality that a craftsman can give to make each piece unique,” says Nick.

According to Nick and Lidia, home furnishings should give us the style and comfort that we desire, but they should also be well made. “Furnishings should be just as important as your home’s foundation,” says Lidia. “The structure should be solid. If not, the rest of the components wear out more quickly, eventually falling apart.”

With the opening of the new location in Fontana, Nick and Lidia have created a one-stop design center with a variety of offerings. Customers can order new pieces designed to their specifications with Nick and Lidia overseeing each step of the process from the initial consultation, to design, to production and final completion. Their showroom includes many original pieces so customers can see first-hand the quality of their work. Customers can also bring in existing furniture pieces to be reupholstered, updated and transformed. The design resource room is available for project planning, design and selection of fabrics and finishes for customers as well as professionals.

Not just limited to custom furniture design/build and furniture reupholstering, the business also offers services such as re-styling; antique restoration; window treatments; bedding; upholstered headboards; wall panels, re-stuffing cushion inserts; fabric selection; full service interior design; and custom cabinetry. Plus in-home consultations, by appointment, are available to assess each customer’s needs and style.

If these services weren’t enough, Nick and Lidia have also expanded their Fontana location to include a retail shop, where you’ll find a selection of fine quality indoor and outdoor furniture, unique home accessories and gifts. Stop in and visit their new home furnishing center!
