This month, Lake Geneva Public Library Director Emily Kornak suggests three books/authors you might remember from the 1980s. While the library is a great place to pick up new books, it’s also a great place to revisit some old favorites. There are also TV or film versions of all of these stories, too. What are some books you remember from a few decades ago that you would reread?
“The Lord God Made Them All” by James Herriot
Since we’re talking publication dates in the 80s, this makes the list. Usually, “All Creatures Great and Small” makes my top three favorite books of all time, but that was published in the 70s, so the fourth book will have to represent the author here. It’s actually my least favorite book in this series, but in spite of that, the whole series is worth reading over and over again for its humor, humanity, and stunning Yorkshire Dales setting (and dialect).
“Lonesome Dove” by Larry McMurty
One of the quintessential 80s novels, this 1986 Pulitzer Prize winner inspired a TV mini-series and is one of THE westerns to read, even if you’re not usually a western reader. This is a cast of characters you will remember long after you finish the book. If you somehow missed it, it’s a great time to pick it up and check it out.
“Presumed Innocent” by Scott Turow
The movie was a huge hit, but this is a classic case of “the book was better” for me, and definitely got me hooked on good legal dramas/thrillers. If you remember it well enough to skip a reread, pick up the sequel published in 2010, “Innocent.”
