Paper Dolls’ Christmas Open House Ushers in the Holidays

Kristi Hugunin loves Christmas, and as owner of Lake Geneva’s Paper Dolls Home Furnishings, she shares that passion with customers each year by transforming the store into a holiday wonderland for its Christmas Open House.

From themed trees and countless sparkling lights to shimmering garland and other Christmas-themed home décor, visitors are in for a treat when they step through the door of Hugunin’s 14,000-square-foot store in the Geneva Square Shopping Center.

Originally established as a wallpaper hanging business 33 years ago, Paper Dolls is a premier destination for name brand furniture, unique artwork, interesting accent pieces and a talented staff of interior designers.

Hugunin and her partner, Chris Haak, who retired in 2010, opened their 600-square-foot store in 1986. The business has expanded through years of hard work, and Hugunin is quick to attribute her success to the glory of God.

That’s why to ring in the happiest time of year, Hugunin will be offering a 10% storewide discount from Nov. 14-30. Throughout the event, she’ll also be serving complimentary cookies and coffee and the store will be filled with live Christmas music between 12:30-3:30 p.m. on Small Business Saturday, which is Nov. 30.

“When people walk through the door, they’re transformed back to their childhood days, and they just love the joy and happiness it brings them,” Hugunin says.

According to Hugunin, Paper Dolls carries only the finest name brand furniture from manufacturers such as Lee, Fairfield, Norwalk, Rowe, Lexington and Braxton Culler. You’ll also find a leather furniture line from Hancock and Moore.

It takes three weeks to complete displays full of Christmas-themed bedding, pillows, throws, dishes and more. Hugunin brings in items from vendors who exclusively sell Christmas items, and she scatters unique, custom floral arrangements throughout the store.

“Everybody loves the magic of Christmas,” she says.

In addition to furniture and accessories, the store is widely known for its selection of artwork. The constantly evolving look also applies to the store’s room settings, which offer inspiration to customers as well as the store’s staff of interior designers, who are available to help customers with any project in their home, no matter how big or small. “Our mission is to help people create the home they’ve always dreamed of and to make their vision a reality,” Hugunin says.

Some of design services available include accessorizing room settings; custom window treatments; fabric selections for upholstery, drapery and bedding ensembles; and assistance with the selection of wallpaper, tile, floor coverings and fixtures.

According to Hugunin, the Christmas displays also serve as examples for those who may want to transform their own homes for the holidays.

“We’ve always decorated for Christmas, but probably the last eight years we’ve really gone all out, much more than we ever have in the past, and that’s because we’ve seen the reaction of people and the volume of people coming through to see our Christmas displays,” Hugunin says.
