Summertime Reads Perfect for the Beach or Patio

Your must-read list for this summer is about to get a little longer. We tapped Emily Kornak, library director for the Lake Geneva Public Library, for some binge-able titles to satiate your entertainment needs. Here are her reviews of three new releases:

The Flight Portfolio” by Julie Orringer

This book tells the story of the Emergency Rescue Committee, a group founded by an American journalist to help European artists and writers immigrate to the U.S. to escape the Nazis. This is the kind of historical fiction that will grab your attention from the first pages and not let go; full of characters and places and the sights and smells and sounds of Europe in the 1930s. If you want something immersive and gripping, give this one a try.

“Rodham” by Curtis Sittenfeld

This is a “what if” novel around the question, “What if Hillary Rodham had not married Bill Clinton?” It’s a beach read for any political junkies or Hillary fan, or anyone even occasionally interested in alternative history. It’s a slow burner that gets more and more interesting as it progresses — halfway through I was committed to finding out what happens in the end. Love Hillary or hate her, this is a book you’ll tell others about.

“Everything Chocolate: A Decadent Collection of Morning Pastries, Nostalgic Sweets, and Showstopping Desserts” by America’s Test Kitchen

The library has a fabulous collection of cookbooks, and if you’ve never checked one out, here’s a recommendation to pick up next time you visit. I suggest chocolate lovers check out the recipes for Nanaimo bars and chocolate-hazelnut biscotti. Honestly, chocolate lovers will be happy with most of the recipes in this book. These days we could all use some comfort food to soothe the soul, and what’s better than chocolate?

Emily Kornak is the library director at the Lake Geneva Public Library. When she’s not reading, you can find her kayaking, spending time with family and friends or her four rescue dogs and backyard chickens.
